Set in the alternate J. J. Abrams Star Trek universe, the USS Enterprise defeated the Narada and returned to Earth for memorial services and awards ceremonies. Many cadets received meritorious commissions and were issued orders to serve in the fleet. Captain Pike recovered from his convalescence and retained command, appointing Lieutenant Commander James Kirk on as his second.
Two weeks later, on 2258:57, the USS Enterprise launched once again for her next big adventure. Her five-year mission? To explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.
